Akinwunmi Ambode was born on 14 June, 1963 in Epe LGA, Lagos State. He was born to the family of Late Mr. Festus Akinwale Ambode and Mrs. Christianah Oluleye Ambode. He is one out of the ten children of his parents and he attended St Jude’s Primary School, Ebutte Meta, Lagos in 1969.
He sat for the National Common Entrance Examination in 1974 and gained admission into Federal Government College, Warri.

In 1981, He completed his Ordinary and Advanced Level with distinction and second best result in West Africa at the Higher School Certificate Exams.
He played Hockey and Cricket while in secondary school and was part of the then Bendel State Cricket team.
He gained admission into University of Lagos where he read accounting and graduated in 1984. He served in the Central Bank of Nigeria in Sokoto, Sokoto State.
Akinwunmi was employed by the Lagos State Waste Disposal Board as an Accountant Grade II.
